Miles Mulrain Jr. is a community organizer based out of Orlando, FL. Born in Bronx, NY, Miles moved to Orlando, Florida at the age of 7 where he was raised in the Parramore neighborhood. His mother remarried and had 3 new additions to the family. After her divorce, and having to work 2 jobs that occupied most of her time, Miles was left to be the man of the house.
Miles was always able to do well in school as he graduated high school with honors and had a natural knack for his studies. He attended Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, FL briefly before returning home to Orlando to finish his studies at Valencia College. He studied Computer Science with a focus on Java and C+ programming. Afterwards Miles would become a local musician and promoter for 4 years working with the local nightlife businesses in Central Florida.
In 2015, due to the upsurge of violence, Miles worked to put on community events to connect members of the neighborhood. Events ranged from cookouts to book bag giveaways. In 2016 a close friend of Miles, who was a community organizer, was an innocent victim of a shooting homicide in the neighborhood that they both grew up in. The friend of Miles was among 2 innocent bystanders that lost their lives in a drive by that left 6 people shot, the friend and another innocent victim passed away. It was so senseless that Miles decided to put forth a greater effort.
In 2016 , Miles founded Let Your Voice Be Heard, Inc., a nonprofit 501(c)(3), and its subsidiaries, Black Orlando United and Peace in Orlando. These organizations focus solely on empowering communities in different forms such as mentoring, "stop the violence" events, workshops, community forums, community "fun days," community policing, and more. Some of the past events that Miles has hosted or helped facilitate are the "Orlando Blackout March" in 2016 that included over 2,500 participants from residents of Orlando-to-Orlando Police Department officers.
In 2017 , Miles has also participated in public forums such as the "Solutions Summit" that took place at FAMU College of Law, featuring commissioners, the OPD deputy chief, Orange County Sheriff's Office Crime Prevention Task Leader, the Florida state-attorney elect of Orange and Osceola County Aramis Ayala, and more. He has also worked with groups such as Equal Justice USA in 2017 to help take over 500 residents to the capitol of Florida, Tallahassee to fight for change for the State Attorney Aramis Ayala.
In 2018 Miles also worked with Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice to take over 400 survivors to the capitol, Tallahassee once again. They advocated for victim rights and services that have not been seen in the communities of color in Florida. We worked with several senators and aides to orchestrate a massive healing space in the middle of the Capitol Building. It commemorated the launch of the Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice individual chapters statewide.
At the end of the year, Miles was able to launch his first paid voter registration campaign with a goal of 900 cards with 2 volunteers, which he achieved in 4 weeks. He also was the Quality control coordinator and Executive Director for the campaign. This would lead to 4 more successful voter registration campaigns in the coming years.
Miles has also co-founded a Youth Incarceration mentoring program with the Juvenile Detention Center and hosted multiple forums and workshops in Orlando, FL and worked on rallies in Tallahassee, Sacramento, CA, New York and more. He is currently working on creating more programs for victims of crime, at-risk persons and incarcerated and formerly incarcerated persons.
In 2019, Miles worked to bring the first Central Florida Juneteenth program to the Central Florida area in the town of Eatonville. It featured over 50 vendors, 10 performers, 5 speakers, 3 dance teams and more special events. It was a widespread celebrated event which led to inspire legislation from the reigning Senator Randolph Bracy at that time, to develop a bill that would make Juneteenth an official state holiday.
Miles also achieved his goals for his voter registration campaign in the year of 2019 as the executive director, and Charlotte Davis as quality control coordinator. They had 2 volunteer canvassers and a 16-week goal of 1,900 voter registration cards, which was achieved. This would be the last voter registration campaign until 2021 due to the heights of the pandemic that would come in 2020.
Albeit the pandemic did stop a lot of in person campaigns and outreach, it did not stop Miles' activism. In 2020, Miles was able to organize several protests around the George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Salaythis Melvin tragedies (officer-involved homicides on black people). Miles organized a protest in the summer of 2020 outside of Derek Chauvin's (the officer that killed George Floyd) home which led to national coverage and 1,600 people attending in person. This would lead to a summer of more protests with the largest attendance being recorded at 10,000 (Source : WFTV 9). Miles was recognized in several media outlets including the NY times for his activism and worked to have new policies and legislature passed in 2020 on the city, county level in Orlando and Orange County respectively, and state level in Florida.
Miles also assisted in 2020 with the campaign of Monique Worrell for State Attorney of Circuit 9, which she was able to win the election. Miles managed over 40 canvassers that worked on a 2-month canvassing campaign for the upcoming election. He also produced and shot his own commercial, which was featured on local TV, social media and various other platforms.
In 2021, Miles Mulrain continued his activism and a youth mentoring program in Orlando. He has organized several protests and forums that addressed next steps after the heights of the pandemic and peak of the Black Lives Matter movement. He also was recognized by The Orlando Magic as a hometown hero and neighborhood change agent. He also was chosen by Mayor Jerry Demings to serve on the Orange County Citizen's Safety Task Force as an intervention specialist on the Intervention subcommittee and as an organization in the main committee. He worked to bring various programs centered around youth development, young adult development, crime prevention and more.
In 2022, Miles worked with the City of Orlando to help build up their My Brother's Keeper program and to help the planning stages for a crime prevention program, known as the "Community Violence Intervention Program." With Let Your Voice Be Heard under the umbrella of "CVIP", Miles was able to work with the City of Orlando to implement a 7 figure program dedicated to crime prevention that has seen astounding decreases in shooting violence since its incarnation. Miles Mulrain has been a fellow of organizations such as FRRC, that works on second chances and re-entry for returning citizens. He has coordinated for chapter such as the Orlando Chapter for Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice. He is a former fellow of the REFORM organization, which is co-founded by Meek Mill, Jay-Z, and billionaire Michael Rubin.
In 2023, Miles continued to serve on the Orange County Citizen's Safety Task Force as an intervention specialist and helped to bring into fruition the "Credible Messengers' program which is a nationally renowned Crime Prevention program. He has also worked to bring a mobile victim advocacy unit together under the Orange County which focuses on bringing services to victims of crime remotely and bringing resources to a person or family that has experienced a violent crime. This program has been revered since its brainstorming period.
Also in 2023, Miles Mulrain Jr. worked to bring together a housing program which offers private and shared rooms for those who are displaced from their residences and experiencing periods of housing insecurity and/or homelessness. The program works with entities such as the Homeless Service Network, Central Florida coalition, Aspire Health Partners, SALT Outreach and more. It has helped to house over 50 individuals since its incarnation and is still ongoing.
...continued to work and serve in the community and his track record shows. He has worked as a volunteer and as a leader. He is ready, willing and has been serving District 5 of the City of Orlando and will continue to do so whether he is elected to office or not.
When it comes to leadership, we need leaders that are ready and able to do the job. Miles Mulrain Jr. is all of the above and more. Come May 21st, 2024, vote for Miles Mulrain Jr. for District 5 Commissioner of the City of Orlando.
